Muscular, savoury Southern Valley's Pinot Noir.
"This wine was sourced from the Yarrum Vineyard, located in the Southern Valleys sub-region of Marlborough. It is planted on a clay hillslope, with a north-westerly aspect. This ensures the vines receive ample sunlight, and produce wines with a distinct muscularity and savouriness, different from the typical Marlborough Pinot Noir style. The vineyard is Biogro certified organic, something that is very important to us, as it allows the site to translate clearly through the wine. It is also the neighboring vineyard to the Tilly’s, where we sourced fruit for the 2018 version of this wine.
2019 was an amazing year for Marlborough Pinot Noir, with low yields and perfect harvest weather giving concentrated wines with structure and intensity. The fruit was handpicked, and wild fermented with 30% whole bunches. It was gently pumped over each day and given a foot tread towards the end of ferment to break up the bunches. It was pressed after 25 days on skins for malolactic fermentation and elevage in old French oak barriques and puncheons. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered in January 2020.
The wine has a deep ruby colour, with regional damson plum and violet aromatics. The palate is juicy with the same fruit flavours carrying through. The mouthfeel has a silky richness, typical of the clay soils of the Southern Valleys, before firming up to a textural finish, with the tannins from the whole bunch providing direction and drive to the wine."
