Muscular, savoury Central Otago Pinot Noir.

"Our first Central Otago Pinot Noir was sourced from an elevated vineyard near the Lowburn subregion, close to our Chardonnay vineyard. It is a 15-year-old vineyard, planted on the typical schist filled soils of the region. The vines have a gently northerly aspect, but ripen quite late due to the elevation and exposure to the cold southerly winds. Central Otago is an extreme place to grow grapes and this site exemplifies that!

A mix of clone 115 and 667 were handpicked and fermented naturally with 30% whole bunches. This wine was plunged and pumped over daily, to help build texture alongside the characterstic bold fruit of the region. It was pressed after 30 days on skins for elevage in old puncheons before bottling unfined and unfiltered in February 2020.

We picked this wine earlier than is traditional in Central Otago as we wanted to bring interesting elements to the wine aside from the ripe cherry fruit typical of the region. The colour is a bright, light cherry red with wild strawberry and raspberry aromatics – and a definate fruity pop from the whole bunch component. The palate has juicy red fruit flavours, combined with firm textural tannins. This wine benefits from decanting and shows a brighter more delicate side to Central
Otago Pinot Noir."
