Aglianico is a grape with a very long history - it may have originally come from Greece and could be the grape used in the famous Falernian wine of Roman times - considered to be the greatest wine in the world! Certainly Pliny the Elder appears to have enjoyed it. In modern times it is sometimes known as the Barolo of the South - its intense tannic structure and acid meaning it can age well. This is a lovely example of Aglianico de Vulture from Basilicata - up front there are plums and blueberries but also lovely floral notes, olive and a little almond. Pair it with a big meaty casserole or some slow cooked brisket for a winter feast.
