"A savoury wine, light copper in colour with abundant aromas of osmanthus, samphire and spice. A crisp, bright palate with gentle chalky tannins and a very long backbone of acidity.
This year we wanted to add complexity through multiple varieties. We hand-picked Riesling, Gewurtztraminer, with a little Gruner Veltliner and St Laurent. Fermented separately, without any additions, in amphoras and open top fermenters on skins for one month before aging in old barrels. Bottled without any sulphur addition (some may be present)."
The Wine Front :
An emerging sect of NZ orange wines is breathing a zephyr of change into the industry there – so often innovators in so many categories and yet sometimes feeling a little reluctant to evolve in wine. Muddy Water has often been in front of the curve, however. A great producer from arguably my favourite region in NZ. Gewurz, riesling, saint laurent, gruner in the mix here.
Very chewy, chalky, farmhouse-cider-esque orange wine of depth, clarity and complexity. I really like this. Mandarin, clove, dried citrus peel, bergamot all jostling. Seriously good and serious tannins, excellent length and generally just a very good expression of the style at a more considered and detailed end of the spectrum. Excellent. (95 Points)
