Georgia has the world's oldest wine culture - they can claim 8000 continuous vintages! And their winemakers know a thing or two about grapes! Here's three very different Georgian wines from respected producer Teliani Valley.
The 2019 Teliani Valley Glekhuri Kisi Qvevri is made in the traditional amphora (qvevri). Kisi is an indigenous white grape and this is a skin-contact and oxidative wine in the traditional Georgian style. There's good acid but also the complexity of nuts, dried fruit and honey along with a good tannic backbone.
2021 Teliani Valley Saperavi Rose is a rose made from the great Georgian red grape - Saperavi. With its red flesh, Saperavi makes a much darker and more intense rose than you'd normally expect. Its full of intense strawberry and cherry flavours and has a touch of tannic structure. Just off-dry, its a great accompaniment to spicy food.
2021 Teliani Valley Tsinandali Oak aged is a Georgian white wine made from Tkatsiteli and Mtsvani grapes. Its zingy line of acid responds well to time in oak. The acid is still present as a lovely citrus flavour but softened and made more food-friendly. Think fume blanc rather than chardonnay but with plenty of white peach fruitiness.
